چکیده

Ecosystems are changing in complex and unpredictable ways, analysis of these changes is facilitated by coordinated, long-term research. Meeting diverse societal needs requires an understanding what populations communities will be dominant 20, 50, 100 yr. This paper a product synthesis effort the U.S. National Science Foundation funded Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network addressing LTER core research area communities. revealed that each site had at least one compelling story about their would look like 50 or As stories were prepared, themes emerged, grouped into papers along five for this special issue: state change, connectivity, resilience, time lags, cascading effects. addresses resilience theme includes from Baltimore (urban), Hubbard Brook (northern hardwood forest), Andrews (temperate rain Moorea (coral reef), Cedar Creek (grassland), North Temperate Lakes (lakes) sites. The concept (the capacity system to maintain structure processes face disturbance) old topic has seen resurgence interest as nature extent global environmental change have intensified. we present here show power manipulation experiments (Cedar Creek), value monitoring forests both natural (Andrews, Brook) urban settings (Baltimore), insights can gained modeling and/or experimental approaches paired with observations (North Lakes, Moorea). Three main conclusions emerge analysis: (1) Resilience matured over past 40 yr program; (2) there many examples high among ecosystems network; (3) also warning signs declining study. These highlight need studies address how diversity sites within facilitates emergence overarching concepts important driver ecosystem structure, function, services, futures.

Stasis and change: social psychological insights into social-ecological resilience

Ecologists have used the concept of resilience since the 1970s. Resilience also features in many of the social and economic sciences, though in a less central role and with a variety of interpretations. Developing a fuller understanding of the concept of socialecological resilience promises advances in how science can contribute to achieving better environmental outcomes, locally and globally. ...

Limits on ecosystem trophic complexity: insights from ecological network analysis.

Articulating what limits the length of trophic food chains has remained one of the most enduring challenges in ecology. Mere counts of ecosystem species and transfers have not much illumined the issue, in part because magnitudes of trophic transfers vary by orders of magnitude in power-law fashion. We address this issue by creating a suite of measures that extend the basic indexes usually obtai...

Engineering Resilience versus Ecological Resilience

Ecological science has been shaped largely by the biological sciences. Environmental science, on the other hand, has been shaped largely by the physical sciences and engineering. With the beginning of interdisciplinary efforts between the two fields, some of the fundamental differences between them are generating conflicts caused more by misunderstanding of basic concepts than by any difference...

Challenges of Action Research: Insights From Language Institutes

Action research is a small-scale intervention in the functioning of the real world to address practitioners’ own issues and carry out a close examination of the effects of such an intervention. Classroom-based research, or action research, can be the viable solution to some pandemic academic sluggishness and scientific apathy. However, the erroneous impression that research is an elite discipli...
